The Life and Times of Titian with Some Account of His Family

London: John Murray, 1881. Second edition. Original Cloth. Two volumes. Royal octavo, brown cloth, gilt with decorated spines and gilt lettering. I; xlvii, (i), 459pp. with appendix. II; viii, (ii), 541pp. with appendix. Index precedes text in volume one. Illustrated. Frontispiece portraits in each volume plus seventeen black and white plates. Errata slip in volume one. A very good set. Uncut. Small dent to spine of volume one. This second edition is identically paginated as the first edition. It was issued without any additional material, not even a preface. 'For English readers, the Life and Times of Titian by Crowe and Cavalcaselle (1877) superseded all previous works, such as those of Sir Abraham Hume (1829) and Northcote (1830)' (Classic Encyclopedia Web site). 'As a journalist and native English speaker, Crowe did all of the writing for the books. Cavalcaselle provided a knowledge of art and documents. Their art histories were the first written in English to make use of documentary evidence and research, rather than the hearsay mythology of much of 19th-century art writing. Their books went into numerous editions and are still considered an important part of the literature of art history. The popularity of their books was such that they were issued in German and Italian editions' (Dictionary of Art Historians Web site). '[T]he first major monograph on the artist' (Britannica Online Encyclopedia). Very Good. Item #12121
