Du Chaillu was an anthropologist and zoologist who in the 1860s confirmed the existence of gorillas and the Pygmy people. His interest in Africa came when, as a youth, he accompanied his father on a business trip to Africa where he was educated and cultivated his interests in the natural history and peoples of Africa and their languages.
