This copy bears a gift inscription by James B(ishop) Ford (1845-1928) to Carleton T. Chapman (1860-1925) dated December 1911. Ford was director of several companies including: Meyer Rubber Co.; American Bank Note Co.; General Rubber Co.; Goodyear Metalic Rubber Shoe Co.; Goodyear Rubber Glove Co.; US Tire Co.; along with other positions. He was a commodore of Larchmont Yacht Club, and active in the New York Yacht Club and several others. He was a president of the Explorers' Club, vice-president of the American Geographical Society and a trustee of the Museum of the American Indian (Heye Foundation). Chapman was a noted artist and printmaker of nautical paintings. He was commissioned by the US Naval Academy to paint a series of works to illustrate Barnes' Naval Actions of the War of 1812. He went on to become the designated US Navy war artist and was sent to Cuba to depict the Spanish American War for Harper's Weekly. Among his many exhibitions were the Columbian Exposition, the Atlanta Exposition, and the Pan-American Exposition.
